Managing Your Debts

Several debt management plans are offered by service providers and money lenders that are helpful in managing your debts. These plans aim at gradually eliminating your debts and each of them may differ in terms of types of agreement, services available, subsequent financial status of the debtors and length of the program. Common debt management plans may include debt consolidation, debt settlement and debt counselling.

Debt consolidation: These plans are the most widely acceptable and practiced programs for debt management. In debt consolidation, you obtain a loan for the total balance of your debts and use these funds to pay them off. This can typically lead to a reduction in the amount of interest you pay and your repayments will be combined into a single monthly sum. This eases the burden of managing multiple debts and significantly reduces the risk of you missing a payment.

Debt settlement: These programs are also termed as debt elimination plans as they allow the debtors to pay off their debts within an extended period of time. The companies dealing in debt settlement negotiate with the creditors to reduce the debtors’ amount of debt or rate of interest. Creditors will often freeze interest for a period of time to allow the debtor to repay more of the capital owed. Monthly repayments are usually based on the disposable income of the debtor after all necessary expenses have been accounted for.

Debt counselling: These plans are provided by the professionals who work to teach you all about managing your debts, from eliminating the debts to avoiding the debts. The debt counselling service providers are able to tell you which debt management plan is suitable for you, based on your individual situation. There are several not-for-profit agencies which provide debt counselling to debtors free of charge.

A plan of debt management may be perfect for you if you have been struggling to pay your bills and cannot manage to pay more than a limited amount of money every month. These plans can help debtors by potentially lowering interest charges and thus allowing them to pay off all their debts within a few years. Accredited credit counsellors are also there to work for you and create a manageable budget as per your current particular situation. Thus these plans are helpful in paying off your debts and also save some money so that you can handle any unexpected expenditure in the future.
