How to Budget

Creating a budget may not be a very exciting task but it is essential for keeping your finances in order. Before you start creating your budget, it is important to examine your expenses and income and be alert if you are spending more than you are earning. If you want to know how to budget, then here are some of the steps that you have to follow:

  • Collect all the financial statements: These statements should include your bank statements, recent utility bills, investment accounts and all the information regarding your expenses and income.
  • Record all your income and expenditure: Apart from your regular salary, also keep record of your other sources of income. Also maintain a list of all your regular monthly expenses including your mortgage payments, car insurance, car payments, entertainment, groceries, dry cleaning and utilities.
  • Break your expenses in two categories: These two categories are variable and fixed. Variable expenses change every month and may include items like groceries, entertainment, gifts, eating out and fuel. Fixed expenses remain the same every month including your car payments, rent, Internet, cable or satellite service, and credit card or loan payments.
  • Calculate your income and expenses for a month: Deduct the total of your expenses from the total income. If your total expenses are less than your total income, then you are on your way to a good financial budget and you can save the extra amount in other essential areas such as making credit card payments for eliminating your debts or other retirement savings.
  • Making adjustments to the expenses: If not less than, your expenses should be at least equal to your income. If your expenses are more than your income, then you can look for areas where you can cut down your expenses. While some expenses are necessary, you can cut down the ones which are not vital for your living.

Once you know how to budget and have created a budget plan to manage your finances, it is important to review the budget regularly so that you can stay on track. After one month of creating your budget, compare your actual expenses with what you created in your budget. In this way, you will be able to know that whether you are able to stick to your budget plan or not. By doing that, you will also be able to know where there is a need for improvement.
